Our Corgi, Scamp loves sweet potato fries as a treat from time to time. He first had them when visiting his cousin, Leo at our daughter and son-in-law’s home. We, of course, went right to our nearest pet store and bought a bag which ran about $15 for ONE pound – a bit steep, in my estimation. Still, they are such a healthy treat, so I began researching a less expensive option to store-bought.
What I discovered were several recipes for HOMEMADE sweet potato fries at a much more acceptable price. I can purchase 3 medium-sized sweet potatoes for under $1.50, do a little prep at home, bake them and Scamp has a treat he loves. You can do the same! Below is a recipe for you to try and share with your pet:
Homemade Sweet Potato Fries
- Preheat oven to 250° F.
- Wash and dry your sweet potatoes
- Carefully slice sweet potatoes into long strips about 1/4” thick using a sharp knife or a mandolin
- Place strips on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper – (easier clean up)
- Drizzle with olive oil, coat both sides and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon
- Bake for 3 hours, turning halfway through
Once cool, place in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks or in the freezer for up to 4 months. I usually make a larger batch so I can have some fresh in the fridge and some for later in the freezer.
